Range

The Northern blunt-spined is a fascinating lizard native to the woodlands of Australia's tropical Northern Territory. These agile reptiles can often be spotted basking on rocks and logs or swiftly moving through the underbrush. Their unique appearance and behavior make them an intriguing part of the local wildlife. Observing these monitors in their natural habitat offers a glimpse into the vibrant ecosystem of the region.

Heating

&

Lighting

Northern blunt-spined monitors are a diurnal species that require high heat and UVB to thrive. For our Northern blunt-spined monitors we maintain their basking temperatures between 110℉ to 120℉ and ambient temperatures of 80℉ to 85℉ to ensure proper thermoregulation.  As for UVB we utilize Arcadia's D3 12% UVB High Output T-5 bulbs which provides the much needed UVB exposure to allow for proper calcium synthesis preventing metabolic bone disease (MBD).  With that said we keep our monitors on a 12 hour light cycle. Providing 12 hours of light and 12 hours of darkness, thus replicating a natural light cycle. Having a proper understanding of their lighting requirements helps create a better environment for these incredible lizards.

Nutrition

At our facility, we prioritize the health and well-being of our Northern blunt-spined monitors by a diverse diet tailored to their high metabolism. Our offerings include a variety of appropriately sized insects, such as gut-loaded crickets, dubia roaches, black soldier fly larvae, and silkworms. This balanced diet ensures they receive the essential nutrients they need to thrive. We are committed to maintaining their vitality and happiness through proper nutrition.

Humidity

Requirements

Northern blunt-spined monitors should have varying humidity levels throughout their enclosure. The goal is to replicate the same micro climates that these animals have access to in the wild. A range from 50% - 70% humidity should be available to them throughout their enclosure. This is achievable by providing a humid hide or area within the enclosure where the humidity can be slightly higher to allow the monitor to regulate its hydration as needed. These humidity levels can be maintained by misting the enclosure regularly, using a deep substrate layer, or providing a good sized water bowl.

Habitat
&
Enrichment

Create a comfortable and enriching environment for your Northern blunt-spined monitors with the appropriate enclosure size. For a single monitor, an enclosure measuring 3'L x 18"W x 12"H is ideal, while a pair will thrive in a larger enclosure measuring 3'L x 18"W x 18"H. These small monitors will utilize every inch of their habitat, so include a 3D background  with shelves and cork hollows, along with a deep substrate layer for burrowing. Enhance their environment further with live plants and a layer of leaf litter for added enrichment.

Life Span

Northern blunt-spined monitors can thrive for 10-15 years with the right care and husbandry. Providing a suitable habitat and balanced diet are essential for longevity. By maintaining optimal conditions, you can ensure a happy and healthy life for your Northern blunt-spined monitor.
