My Story – Devon, Founder of Varanid Kingdom LLC

Hi! I’m Devon, and my journey into reptile keeping began when I was just six years old—with a deep love of dinosaurs (yes, I was that dino kid). My father supported my interest, but only if I committed to thoroughly researching any reptile I wanted to keep. That challenge sparked a lifelong passion for learning about reptiles and animals of all kinds.

As a teen, during a visit to Virginia, I purchased my first monitor—a baby savannah monitor that grew into a 4-foot, puppy-like companion. That experience sealed my love for monitor lizards. While researching different species, I discovered the fascinating world of Odatria, the dwarf monitors. The Ackie monitors especially stood out to me, and it wasn’t long before I brought home my first red Ackie from a shop in Virginia Beach. That little lizard lit the spark that would later become Varanid Kingdom.

Over the years, I deepened my understanding of monitor behavior, acquired more species—like Varanus similis—and began seriously researching captive breeding. I was driven by the fact that so few people knew about this incredible group of reptiles. It became my mission to educate others and help bring these lizards into the spotlight of the reptile community.

A major milestone came when I brought home a pair of Hendrick line yellow Ackies, Rathalos and Rathian. Just two days later, they bred—and I was blessed to hatch my first clutch of eight healthy babies with a 100% success rate.

Today, I’ve successfully bred several Odatria species and continue to expand. My goal remains the same: to educate keepers of all experience levels about the beauty, intelligence, and care of dwarf monitors—and to provide ethically bred, healthy specimens to the reptile community.
